Codecov: View coverage in the editor

When the project is connected to Codecov, the editor gutter shows the coverage that your CI uploaded to Codecov. You do not need to run tests locally.

Read the coverage gutter

Open any source file of the project. Colored bars next to the line numbers show the coverage of each line:

  • Green: the line is covered.

  • Yellow: the line is partially covered, for example when only some branches of a condition run.

  • Red: the line is not covered.

The bars use the line coverage colors of the current editor color scheme. To change them, go to Settings | Editor | Color Scheme | General and edit Full, Partial and Uncovered under Line Coverage. Lines without a bar have no coverage data in Codecov, such as comments and blank lines.

Coverage is shown by default and loads when you open a file.

Open the details of a line

View the coverage of a line

  1. Click the coverage bar next to a line. A popup shows the line number and its status: Covered, Partially Covered or Not Covered.

  2. Click one of the links in the popup:

    • Open in Codecov opens the file in Codecov in your browser, scrolled to the line.

    • Generate AI Prompt copies a test-writing prompt for the code to the clipboard. For details, see Codecov: Generate AI prompts from coverage.

    • Hide Coverage hides coverage in all editors of the project.

Show, hide and refresh coverage

Show or hide coverage

  • Press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+C (macOS: ⌥ ⇧ ⌘ C). To see or change the shortcut on your operating system, go to Settings | Keymap and search for Show Codecov Coverage.

  • Right-click in the editor and select Hide Codecov Coverage or Show Codecov Coverage.

  • Right-click the editor gutter and select Hide Codecov Coverage or Show Codecov Coverage.

Showing or hiding coverage applies to all editors of the project. Coverage is shown again the next time you open the project. The menu items appear only when the project is connected to Codecov and a repository is detected.

Refresh coverage after a new upload

  • Right-click in the editor and select Refresh Codecov Coverage.

Refresh Codecov Coverage appears only while coverage is shown. The plugin reuses the coverage it loaded in the last 5 minutes, even when you refresh. Coverage from a new upload can take up to 5 minutes to appear.

Which coverage the editor shows

The plugin requests the coverage of each file from Codecov without naming a branch. Codecov then returns the coverage of the latest report on the repository's default branch. Coverage that is uploaded only for your current feature branch does not appear in the gutter.

Files are matched by their path relative to the Git repository root, so the paths in your Codecov reports must match the paths in the repository. The bars are placed by line number. If your local file has added or removed lines compared with the version that Codecov measured, for example because of changes on your branch, the bars below those lines sit next to the wrong lines.
