Codecov: Install and connect

The Codecov plugin reads the coverage that your CI uploads to Codecov. Install it, activate a license or the trial, and connect the project once.

Requirements

  • The current version works only with JetBrains IDEs 2026.3, from build 263.3889 (the 2026.3 EAP) on. It does not install on earlier or later major versions. For JetBrains IDEs 2026.2, the Marketplace provides Codecov 2026.2.5.

  • The project is a Git repository with a remote on GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket.

  • The repository is activated on Codecov, and your CI uploads coverage reports to it. To set this up, see Codecov quick start.

  • A Codecov API token for an account that can access the repository.

Install the Codecov plugin

Install from JetBrains Marketplace

  1. Open Settings | Plugins (Ctrl+Alt+S, macOS: ⌘ ,).

  2. On the Marketplace tab, search for Codecov.

  3. Click Install and restart the IDE if prompted.

You can also install the plugin from its JetBrains Marketplace page.

Start the trial or activate a license

Codecov is a paid plugin with a 10-day free trial. Start the trial or activate a license in Help | Register. In free IDEs, such as Android Studio, use Help | Register Plugins. Buy or manage licenses on the Codecov plugin pricing page.

Connect the project to Codecov

The plugin authenticates with a Codecov API token. The settings page shows the hint "Generate a token at codecov.io/api/" under the token field.

Connect with an API token

  1. In Codecov, create an API token on your personal account, not on an organization account:

    1. Click your avatar in the top right corner and select Settings.

    2. In the left menu, select Access.

    3. Click Generate Token, enter a name for the token and click Generate.

    4. Copy the token.

For details, see Codecov API reference: getting started.

  2. Open the project in the IDE.

  3. Open Settings | Tools | Codecov (Ctrl+Alt+S, macOS: ⌘ ,).

  4. In the Codecov Connection group, keep Server URL at https://api.codecov.io. For a self-hosted Codecov server, enter the base URL of that server instead.

  5. In Service Provider, select where the repository is hosted: Github, Gitlab or Bitbucket.

  6. If you changed Server URL or Service Provider, click OK, reopen the project and open Settings | Tools | Codecov again. Repository detection uses the new values only after you reopen the project.

  7. Paste the token into API Token.

  8. Click Test Connection. The plugin checks the token, finds the Codecov repository that matches the project's Git remote, and saves the token.

  9. Close the result dialog and click OK.

When the connection works, the settings page shows "Connected to Github: demo-org/demo-project" and "Detected Repository: demo-org/demo-project".

The next time you open the project, the plugin detects the repository again from the Git remotes.

Results of Test Connection

Connection Test Successful

The dialog reads "Successfully connected to Codecov and detected repository: demo-org/demo-project". Coverage, the Codecov Metrics dashboard and folder coverage are available.

Connection Test Successful, without a repository

A warning reads "Connected to Codecov but could not detect repository. Please ensure your repository is activated on Codecov." The token works, but no Codecov repository matches the Git remote. To fix it, see Why is no repository detected?.

Connection Test Failed

The dialog reads "Connection failed. Please check your token.", or shows the error returned by the server. To fix it, see How do I fix a failed connection test?.

Connect other projects

Each project needs its own connection. A project that is not connected shows no coverage, even though the API token is saved for all projects.

Connect another project

  1. Open the project and go to Settings | Tools | Codecov. API Token is already filled in.

  2. Click Test Connection.

  3. Close the result dialog and click OK.

If you click OK without Test Connection, the project stays disconnected.

Service Provider applies to all projects, so the plugin works with one provider at a time. To connect a project hosted on another provider, for example GitLab instead of GitHub, select that provider in Service Provider, change the API token if needed, and click OK. Then reopen the project and click Test Connection in its Codecov settings.

Disconnect or change the token

Server URL, Service Provider and the API token apply to all projects. The token is stored in the IDE password safe. The connection to a repository is stored per project.

Disconnect the project

  1. Go to Settings | Tools | Codecov.

  2. Click Disconnect. The button is shown only while the project is connected.

Disconnect removes the connection for the current project only and keeps the stored API token for other projects. The API Token field is then empty, but the plugin has no option to delete the stored token. To invalidate the token, revoke it in the Access settings of your Codecov account. To use a different token, paste it into API Token and click Test Connection.
