AZD writes pull request text and commit messages on demand, from your commits and code changes. You review and edit the result before you create the pull request or commit.

## Before you start

The features in this topic work with the built-in AZD provider without any setup. To use OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or Ollama instead, see [Configure AI providers](azd-ai.html#ai-providers). For what data AZD sends, see [Data and privacy](azd-ai.html#ai-privacy).

## Generate a pull request title and description

Procedure: Generate a title and a description

1. Open the new pull request tab; see [AZD: Create a pull request](azd-create-pull-request.html).

2. In the Title field, click the AI button (Generate Title with AI). The button shows the icon of the active provider. To use another provider, click the arrow next to the button and select it.

3. In the Description field, click the AI button (Generate Description with AI).

4. Edit the generated text if needed, then create the pull request.

AZD generates the title and the description from the commit messages and the diff of the pull request. With the default prompt, it starts with a short summary, followed by the reasons for the change and a list of changes. To stop a generation, click the button again (Stop Generation).

## Update the description of an open pull request

After you push more commits, let AI update the description of your pull request. AI keeps the intent of the existing description and adds the new changes. Only the author of the pull request sees this option.

Procedure: Update the description with AI

1. In the pull request details, click View Timeline.

2. In the timeline header, click Update description using AI.

3. Check the new description. To restore the previous text, click Undo in the Description updated successfully notification within 60 seconds.

To edit the description yourself, see [Edit the description](pull-request-details.html#edit-description).

## Generate a commit message

In projects with an Azure DevOps remote, the commit message toolbar has an AZD button, Generate Commit Message. It generates a message from the changes selected for the commit.

Procedure: Generate a commit message with AI

1. Open the Commit tool window and select the changes to commit.

2. On the commit message toolbar, click Generate Commit Message. To use another provider, click the arrow next to the button and select it.

3. Edit the message if needed, and commit.

Procedure: Generate a commit message from a work item

1. On the commit message toolbar, click the arrow next to Generate Commit Message and select Select Work Item.... The Select Work Item for Commit Message dialog opens. Later clicks on the button open the dialog again.

2. In the dialog, select the project and one or more work items. Clear Only my work items to see all work items.

3. Click Generate Message.

AZD asks AI to write the message from the work items and your changes. If AI cannot write one, AZD fills in the commit message template instead. The Select Work Item... option and the template are set in the work item settings; see [Add work items to a commit message](azd-boards.html#work-item-commit-template).

## Customize the results

Edit the Pull Request title prompt, Pull Request Description Prompt and Commit message prompt to change the style, length or language of the results. See [Configure prompts](azd-ai.html#configure-prompts).
